Get New Students Started with Schoology
When a new student enrolls in your class,
it may take up to 24 hours for them to appear on your Schoology roster. This is because they have to be entered into PowerSchool and then the data has to sync from there. Once the information syncs, your student will also be able to log into Schoology at schoology.mesd.us via single sign-on using his/her MESD Google account. (No need for additional usernames or passwords! 😊)
Once new students appear on your roster, there are a couple of important steps you should take to get them appropriately set up in Schoology:
Step #1:
Excuse Previous Assignments
Any assignments, assessments, etc. that you have assigned to your class prior to a new student's enrollment will appear on the student's "Overdue Assignments List" in Schoology. Obviously, this is problematic (as well as overwhelming) and not exactly a warm welcome to your student. It is very important to clear all previous assignments from the student's view so that they are able to focus on the things they are truly responsible for completing.
Clearing the assignments is very easy to do. In your gradebook, simply mark all the cells associated with previous work as "Excused" using the exceptions flag. Once everything (including work from previous grading periods) has been marked as excused, it will clean up the student's view in Schoology and give them a fresh start.
Step #2:
Provide Parent Access Code and Schoology Resources to the Family
Teachers are responsible for providing the family of a new student with the parent access code(s) associated with their child(ren). The tutorial video will show you how to find the Parent Access Codes, plus we have provided a link to a Parent Instruction Letter (English/Spanish) Template as well as a link to other Schoology resources that should be shared with the families of new students.
